Steel pipe truss is used in the current space structure more and more because the pipe truss has less pole piece, more beautiful nodes than the ball nodes of space frame. It abandons tradition ball nodes of conjunction way, simplification node of structure. The large span pipe truss structure can build many appearance of large span structure. In civil and public building, there are wide development prospect of popularization application especially the construction of the big exhibition hall, roofing of train station, airport and sports hall.

New technologies are constantly being used in building construction. Developers are seeking better ways to build structures while maintaining or increasing their load carrying capabilities. In many cases, these new construction features provide greater strength than previous construction types but at reduced cost. So pipe truss occurs in many more fields because the structures are stronger and more modern. A pipe truss is essentially a triangulated system of straight interconnected structural elements. The most common use of pipe trusses is in buildings, where support to roofs, the floors and internal loading such as services and suspended ceilings, are readily provided. The main reasons for using trusses are:

  • Long span with large area
  • Lightweight with more economic cost
  • Less support with stable structure
  • Reduced deflection (compared to plain members)
  • Opportunity to support considerable loads.

The corresponding side, however, is increased fabrication cost. But in modern steel construction, pipe truss is widely used for public building because above-mentioned causes.
